Life span of solar panel |
The actual lifespan of a solar module is different from just the warranty period written on paper.
1. Standard Expectation
Most modern solar panels are rated for 25 years of performance warranty.
This means after 25 years, they should still generate at least 80–85% of their original capacity.
But that doesn’t mean they stop working after 25 years they just produce less power.
2. Real-World Lifespan
Good quality panels (Tier-1, well-maintained, correct installation) can last 30–40 years.
Even after 40 years, they may still work at \~60–70% efficiency.
Field data from old solar farms (installed in the 1980s–90s) shows many panels still working today.
3. Factors That Affect Lifespan
1.Quality of manufacturing – Tier-1 brands last longer.
2. Installation quality – Poor mounting or wiring can reduce life.
3. Climate – Extreme heat, humidity, snow, or saltwater can speed up degradation.
4. Cleaning & maintenance – Dust, bird droppings, and water damage can shorten life.
5. Technology type – TOPCon & HJT tend to have lower annual degradation than older PERC modules.
4. Degradation Rate (Typical)
PERC mono: \~0.5–0.6% per year
TOPCon: \~0.3–0.4% per year
HJT: \~0.25–0.35% per year
Lower degradation = longer effective life.
✅ In short:
Warranty life: 25 years
Practical life: 30–40 years (with reduced output)
Panels rarely “die” suddenly — they just slowly produce less electricity.
Here’s the solar module lifespan comparison chart for different technologies with output decline over time:
Solar Module Lifespan & Degradation Chart|
Technology Type | Typical Warranty (Years) | Annual Degradation Rate | Output After 25 Years | Practical Life Span | Output After 35 Years |
| Mono PERC| 25 | 0.50–0.60% | \~85% | 30–35 years | \~75% |
| TOPCon| 25–30 | 0.30–0.40% | \~89–92% | 35–40 years | \~82–85% |
| HJT| 30 | 0.25–0.35% | \~91–94% | 35–40+ years | \~85–88% |
| Thin Film| 20–25 | 0.70–1.00% | \~78–82% | 25–30 years | \~65–70% |
💡 Key Insights
HJT and TOPCon have the longest effective life because of lower yearly degradation.
Mono PERC is still very reliable but loses capacity slightly faster.
Thin film is cheaper but generally has a shorter practical lifespan.
Even after 35–40 years, good modules still work just at lower efficiency
